Marla Gales the owner of True Blessings, has a Licensed Bachelor of Social Work. She absolutely loves to continue to further her knowledge and education in our aging population and the trials and tribulations of their everyday life. As we all know Dementia is growing each and every day in our communities, that is why Marla began researching and studying how she could be an asset and resource to our loved ones living with or caring for the one with dementia. Marla attended a workshop in Colorado in August of 2019 to become a Certified Independent Trainer of the Positive Approach to Care (PAC). This program was developed and is overseen by the renown Teepa Snow. Teepa Snow began intensively working in 1980 at the University of North Carolina with the Program on Aging. This program consisted of doctors, social workers, nurses, and other professionals. In this program Teepa learned how the brain works and how it is physically affected by the disease. She also learned how to communicate and how to help de-escalate behaviors in a way that the one living with dementia can relate. In 1997, Teepa teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association and continued her personal growth regarding this disease that was taking over so much of the community around her as well as the world. In 2003, Teepa and the Alzheimer’s Association agreed to “Accepting the Challenge” to make a difference in our world for people living and caring for loved ones with dementia. Teepa Snow then started her own company Positive Approach LLC in 2007 in which she continued educating and going out into the world to help train people the Positive Approach to Caring for ones living with dementia. This program has gotten so big and the demand was so high, Teepa and her small team was no longer able to meet everyone’s needs so she began training others to be certified trainers and consultants. This training is an intense 2-day workshop with a limited class size of 20 students with 5-7 trainers. There was pre-course work and post-course work and you must pass each module before becoming a certified independent trainer. The information gained from this training was eye opening. Marla quickly started seeing and understanding what we all do with our loved one living with dementia and what changes we could make that would make everyone included, work better together. The Positive Approach to Care (PAC) teaches to work “with” the one living with dementia instead of working “to” them. This approach teaches the caregiver the “hand under hand” approach so the loved one with dementia, always feels they are the one in control; however, the caregiver will be able to guide them into doing the task. Also in this training you learn about the five senses and the roles they play in the behaviors and the necessary changes in care with someone living with dementia. Marla is currently offering staff education for facilities and caregivers in the area to help train more people so our ones living with dementia can still be involved and be accepted in their communities. Teepa Snow offers numerous videos on YouTube teaching caregivers how to work with their loved one in a positive approach. If you would like more information regarding Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care please call Marla at True Blessings because she would love to schedule a one to one or a small group training to assist you. Marla’s mission is to have each and every one of her caregivers trained and using this valuable information by the end of January 2020.
